This past year twelve students from the University of South Carolina worked together to produce a three-part narrative short feature film entitled “Before Your Eyes”.

Created in nine months, the film contains three short films that are all interconnected through the perspective of Elijah Silverman, a tormented man whose struggle is his ability to foresee future death’s around him.

Elijah’s torment unveils the individual stories that take place in the film right before the eyes of the audience.

This three part short feature (running time approx. 60 mins.) was written and directed individually by Miguel Felipe Berg, Taylor and Blake Engel, and James Edward Tilden. Each director wrote a short designed to be put all together to form one collaborative story. “Magic Man’ written by Taylor and Blake Engel describes a struggling magician working in a local bar. The film’s main character Victor King must perform one last trick in effort to save his struggling career.

The second piece “Shades of Green” written by James Edward Tilden is about two estranged brothers who have decided to patch up their differences on a fishing trip. The trip however turns into anything but unifying as the greed and vengeance that once crippled their relationship escalades even further.

The third part of the film written by Miguel Berg entitled “Before Your Eyes” acts as the bridge between the pieces. The story’s main character Elijah Silverman is plagued with the ability to foresee death of those around him. The three stories are connected as Elijah foresees the struggles between the two brothers and the hopeless magician in a series of visions which act as lead-ins to the other two stories. The process of producing a film with three writer/directors proved to be a unique but beneficial experience. Each filmmaker was able to express his own style of filmmaking as well as editing and sound collaboration.

To help enhance the quality of the project, the film was shot using a Canon xh-g1 HDV camera which provided the film with better image quality and the filmmakers with an advanced HD workflow. In addition to the three directors, the crew consisted of an art department, pre-production team, and post production sound provided by Matt Cheney. Together with professional production companies, Frosty Palm Studios and Fusioncorp Design Mediahouse based in South Carolina and Kentucky, respectively, the students collaborated to form a year long project that sought to educate themselves beyond the core courses that were being offered in their Media Arts department.

Alex Wroten, a student from the School of Music at the University of South Carolina, composes the film’s score. Together with the individual input of the directors and the talent of student instrumentalists, known as the Neapolitan Trio with Fudge, Alex was able to score the film focusing on each piece at a time to produce a cumulative score that appropriately sets the mood for the whole film. Executively
Produced by Miguel F. Berg, this film is a compilation of hard work and genuine talent that provides quality entertainment to mature audiences everywhere.

A MEMBER AND HIS STORY

We have a thread on the forum that asks you all to share your stories about how SEFA may have helped you. Here is one posted recently.

Almost two months ago, I replied to a posting on this site looking for half-hour scripts. I emailed the contact who runs a shoestring production company that is actually producing work. Two days ago, I received my first ever payment for a script I submitted to this producer, and the script itself is due to be shot at the end of this month.Even better, this producer has commissioned me to write a feature length script based on a story he came up with.Pretty amazing to have all this happen in so short a time simply from answering a posting here.SEFA, you have our gratitude!
